DS Daily: Ha, what a noob
July 31, 2008

We know Nintendo is about bringing people of all ages, shapes and sizes together to enjoy a quick round of screen-touching. Everyone feels great, Nintendo rakes in the cash and hardcore gamers are getting plenty of recognition. Embrace diversity with Nintendo.
And yet … it’s still pretty funny watching non-gamers try their hand at even the simplest casual games and screw up royally. Sure, kindly old Grandpa and naive little sister are exactly the kind of people the DS attracts, but do you still feel slight twinges of amusement when they have trouble completing the most basic of tasks? We love the whole worldwide DS craze and all, but are the hardcore among us (that is, the hardcore that got so upset over a two-hour presentation) chortling silently, basking in gaming omnipotence when it comes to touchscreen prowess? Share your amusing anecdotes with the rest of us!

GT5 Prologue update hits on Friday
July 31, 2008
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Driving

We’ve learned that these features will finally hit this Friday, August 1 as part of an update for the game demo. Auto aficionados will be able to download episodes of programs including England’s Top Gear and Japan’s Best Motoring. Programming created by Polyphony Digital itself - and indeed even hosted by Yamauchi - will also be up for purchase. Speaking of which, SCEA has announced that PPV content will cost 99 cents per episode for the first two weeks of GTTV, after which it will increase to $1.99.
In addition to the debut of GTTV, Sony has confirmed that some welcome gameplay tweaks will be introduced via the update. These include improved collision physics for online races (a biggie), more tire choices for Time Trial play, and fixes in penalty judgments. In speaking with Polyphony’s Yamauchi at E3, we learned that the next GT5P update will introduce new tracks and cars. No date has been set for that yet.

Clarification: No Microsoft-made US 130 Gears of War 2 lancer bundle
July 31, 2008
Earlier, we had reported on the possibility of a US 130 Gears of War 2 bundle that supposedly would come with a replica of the lancer weapon from the game. Well, Xbox 360 Fanboy managed to get some additional clarification from Microsoft and, sad to say, that bundle may have been a misunderstanding.
Microsoft said the following about the bundles they’re offering for the game and the US 130 lancer business Cliff Bleszinski mentioned at Comic-Con 08:
“We have officially announced a Standard Edition (US 59.99) and Limited Edition (US 69.99) for Gears of War 2, which will both be available on November 7th, 2008 worldwide. Retailers often create their own bundles to appeal to specific customers. The ‘Lancer’ bundle referenced at San Diego Comic-Con is not a package being offered by Microsoft Game Studios.”
We suppose that CliffyB was simply referring to the awesomeness of the lancer replica that was put on display at Comic-Con, and not necessarily an actual bundle. That said, it’d be cool if someone packaged that up with a Limited Edition of the game and sold it for a reasonable price.
That way, we’d have something to use for our Marcus Fenix Brokeback Mountain cosplay skit. Zing!

Xbox Live Experience dashboard update leaked, possibly running on modded Xbox 360s
July 30, 2008
We’ve got an interesting report related to the Xbox 360’s fall dashboard update. According to the Wordpress blog of one gamer by the name of Xhavok87, the Xbox Live Experience Dashboard update has been leaked. Not only that, it appears to be running on modded Xbox 360s.
Writes Xhavok87 in his latest update related to the leak,
It has finally been done but NOTE, only modded systems at this point are able to do the install. The process is quite easy if you cannot figure it out but will not be released at this time. A fellow member here by the name of xg4m3r has discovered a path for modded consoles to install the update as you can see in the video above. Like I said in update 8 we are still working on this process to see if we can manage anything on retail consoles. We are not releasing anything at this time but more news is to come soon. Enjoy for tonight because tomorrow should be a whole other day! See you soon!
NOTE: Your Xbox 360 NEEDS to have the Infectus 2 Chip in the system for this work. Not just a modded FW hack the chip is required also. Sorry for the confusion!
Below is a video showing the reported hack in action. We’ll try to get more updates on this bit of news as soon as it becomes available, but for now, stay tuned.

Bury the Shovelware: Deal or No Deal

To learn all there is about something, you sometimes need to go to the extremes. For shovelware, we are about to boldly trek into the eye of the storm. Deal or No Deal has the lowest aggregate score according to Metacritic, narrowly edging out Homie Rollerz. But we need to give it a fair chance. We can’t succumb to the self-fulfilling prophecy. And besides, as a poster hanging in my high school English teacher’s classroom profoundly stated, “what is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right.” Indeed, just because one nerd hates Castlevania 2 doesn’t mean you should automatically define it as a bad game. Okay, I can’t fluff this anymore: Deal or No Deal for the DS isn’t as crappy as you expected. It’s crappier.

Red Alert 3 skipping PS3 due to ‘exotic and tough’ development
July 30, 2008
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Strategy
Apparently, developing games for the PlayStation 3 is roughly comparable to that one time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach — “exotic and tough.” Speaking to VideoGamer.com, EALA producer Amer Ajami used those words to elaborate on the decision to halt PS3 development of the Hitler-free real-time strategy romp, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.
“We actually announced a PS3 version early on but that was when we were still doing a lot of technical exploration of the architecture,” explained Ajami. “PS3 is a very powerful system but as you guys know it’s very exotic and tough to develop for and our engine really at the time wasn’t designed for PS3.” Couch commanders need not give up all hope, though, as Ajami notes EA “might go back and do something with the PS3 later on.” Also just like that time we pushed a wheelbarrow full of lovely, scantily clad ladies up and down the beach.*
*We went back to apologize.
