Backwards compatabily means that a system can play or use game discs from its predecessors. Like on the PS3, I have heard that it can play PS1 and PS2 game discs. But lately, I have read that not all PS3s have this feature.

Ok thanks for info. I think they must do this task at least so we can enjoy playing the previous games of PS1 & PS2

That's what I like on backwards compatibility. One of the most successful backwards compatible game console is the Game Boy Advance SP.

Default Backward Compatibility

All PS3 consoles can play original PlayStation (PS1) titles from the same territorial region. That is, US PS3 consoles can play US (NTSC format) PS1 titles, PAL regions can play PAL format PS1 titles, and Japanese consoles can play NTSC-J titles. The initial series of PlayStation 3 models with either 20Gb, or 60Gb integral hard drives (available in North America, Japan, Hong Kong, & Taiwan) included the original "Emotion Engine" chip found inside the PlayStation 2. These PS3 consoles, therefore, offered on-board dedicated hardware to support PlayStation 2 titles from the local regions.

The later launch of the PS3 (60Gb) console (across Europe, the Oceania, & Asia regions) did not include this chip (to reduce manufacturing costs). Software emulation within the console system software was used instead, but this greatly reduced the number of titles supported.

Since the 20Gb & 60Gb consoles have now been discontinued worldwide, none of the current production models of the PlayStation 3 are capable of playing PlayStation 2 games.

BFN,

fp.

Well... That was sad. It's now been proven that not all PS3s are backwards compatible. Thanks for your explanation.

Honestly, I would love to still play my original nintendo entertainment system but there was a huge flood in my basement a few years back and it totally destroyed all my electronics stored there. I had thousands of games and playing those games really took me back to the time when my life was simple and fun. Damn, I miss those days.
