Backward Compatibility
All PS3 consoles can play original PlayStation (PS1) titles from the same territorial region. That is, US PS3 consoles can play US (NTSC format) PS1 titles, PAL regions can play PAL format PS1 titles, and Japanese consoles can play NTSC-J titles. The initial series of PlayStation 3 models with either 20Gb, or 60Gb integral hard drives (available in North America, Japan, Hong Kong, & Taiwan) included the original "Emotion Engine" chip found inside the PlayStation 2. These PS3 consoles, therefore, offered on-board dedicated hardware to support PlayStation 2 titles from the local regions.
The later launch of the PS3 (60Gb) console (across Europe, the Oceania, & Asia regions) did not include this chip (to reduce manufacturing costs). Software emulation within the console system software was used instead, but this greatly reduced the number of titles supported.
Since the 20Gb & 60Gb consoles have now been discontinued worldwide, none of the current production models of the PlayStation 3 are capable of playing PlayStation 2 games.
