Talking of "pgr", Bizarre Creations (the creator of "Project Gotham Racing") are developing "Blur" [
http://www.blurgame.com ] for Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, & PlayStation 3 platforms. It is due to be released later this year; most likely early November in North America with the release dates for other regions still unconfirmed.
Published by Activision, "Blur", however, is more of an arcade-type of racing title with the inclusion of "Power-ups" (such as the ability to blast any of the other nineteen cars off the track with energy bursts, or boosting speed towards the finish line), rather than the semi-realistic feel of the previous game.
Real-world locations are rendered as track locations, though; Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hackney (London, UK), & Barcelona, Spain.
As you would expect, the same claims are verbally asserted... Martyn Chudley, creative director of Bizarre Creations, has been quoted as saying that “We did our homework and saw a huge opportunity to move beyond traditional racers and create a game completely focused on making racing ‘fun’ again. Blur delivers a new style of racing experience for all gamers, regardless of their experience, skill or genre preferences. Everything the player does, both in their cars and with their cars, is a dramatic adrenaline rush; it’s a real blast!”, and, of course, "...Blur, which is set to break the mold of traditional racing games."
You can engage in competitive and team-based multiplayer races supporting up to 20 online players. Four-player split-screen battles can be played locally on a single console.
The offensive "Power-ups" that have been made known so far require the driver to exercise a strategic approach to their use, rather than conventional usage.
"Shock" emits an electromagnetic pulse to disable cars within the blast radius, or to target a specific driver.
"Barge" sends out a wave of energy from either side of the player's car to knock an opponent away.
"Shunt" is a projectile-like weapon fired from the front of the car.
"Nitro" offers a short speed boost.
"Mines" allow drivers to drop explosive charges behind their vehicles.
"Repair" recovers lost 'health' for the car.
The "Power-ups" (except for "Repair") are stored in three slots on the Heads-Up Display & can be used singularly, or in one combined "Power-up" for increased collateral damage. It has been reported that there may well be up to three hundred different combinations, so expect more to be named nearer to the release date.
