Japanese hardware sales, Nov. 3 - Nov. 9: Dear brother edition

Even if you had, it would have been quite the ocular feat for you to have seen me, jilted and decomposing in last place. Don’t bother looking now — I’ve been retired for quite some time, living out my days in a cottage on an island off the coast of Kumihama, a respite afforded to me by my lucrative years, and a perfect locale for me to focus my energies on planning your demise.br /br /Fret not, dear brother — my murderous ambitious were recently sated by the birth of our newest sibling, the DSi. You see, you’re about to suffer the same fate which I befell, a fate worse than death itself: emabandonment/em. But, no, you may protest, dad said a href=http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/05/nintendo-dsi-wont-immediately-replace-ds-lite-in-u-s/they’d still love me/a when they received their new bundle of joy! An empty promise, brother, I assure you. You’re already quite far down the path I carved over two years ago, your sales figures rendered in twain, your rank plummeting just emone week/em after the DSi’s victorious emergence. You will eventually come in last, your weekly tally dropping into the double digits, then single — then, deeming you emirrelevant/em, a href=http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/japanese-hardware-sales-oct-8-oct-14-title-edition/Media Create will no longer list you/a.br /br /It’s a long, cruel road to obscurity, my brother. DSi shortages will boost your sales, giving you momentary resurgences — but this is but a detour from your inevitable fate. You emwill/em be crushed — though I will not be the one to do the crushing. I no longer harbor the disdain that rose up within my gut the day you entered the world and promptly stole the spotlight, your slender frame casting a shadow upon my bulky build. You are more than welcome to join me in Kumihama. The usual suspects played a thrilling round of Musical Chairs, bringing about a comeback for the PS3, and a return to the bottom rung for the Xbox 360. The [Source: a href=http://www.m-create.com/ranking/Media Create/a] text is glad you’re back, 360. It missed you terribly.br /br /The big news of the week, however, was the DSi, which sold like strikehotcakes/strike Pocky to Japanese gamers, who reportedly can’t go a month without buying some iteration of the DS without developing delirium tremens. Unfortunately, my a href=http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/ludwig-kietzmannpredecessor in the ways of the Japanese hardware sales/a failed to warn me about the caution required when adding a new system to the weekly chart. When typing in the DSi’s sales figures into my trusty Excel spreadsheet, my computer attempted to discern the percentage of change between last week and this week’s sales, divided by zero, then imploded my office.br /br /Don’t fret, dear readers — I’m fine, though I’ll likely lose the damage deposit on my apartment. The fate of my computer, however, is still up in the air. It’s a commonly accepted phenomenon that span style=font-style: italic;Guitar Hero/span and games like it have a habit of inspiring gamers to take up the real thing.brbrI’ve been known to pluck unconvincingly on my brother’s guitar after successfully conquering Cliffs of Dover on Expert so I know this trend firsthand. I’m sure you people who’ve tried the game have similar experiences.brbrIt seems the music instrument distribution industry has finally caught wind to this and is using it to its advantage. Active Music Distribution and a href=http://xbox360.qj.net/tags/activision-blizzard/14851 id=tag title=result of merge between Activision and Vivendi GamesActivision Blizzard/a entered an agreement that will see span style=font-style: italic;Guitar Her/span sold in musical instrument stores across the a href=http://xbox360.qj.net/tags/uk/4320 id=tag title=United KingdomUK/a. Took them long enough. I’ve had teenagers suggest this idea to me.brbrThe obvious benefit for the music stores is that they can net those who are either too intimidated or apathetic to bother learning a conventional instrument and weening them on the videogame version first. In theory, this will get them interested to try the real thing… that’s when the sell you their regular stock.brbrActivision Blizzard’s Lee Worsely mentions in his statement concerning the partnership agreement:brbrp style=padding-left: 40px; padding-right: 40px;By offering incentives with purchases of span style=font-style: italic;Guitar Hero/span, such as a free lesson or a discount on their first instrument purchase, stores can keep these customers. It’s called the Superman Curse. Check it out in Wikipedia. It’s there. brbrI’m not the superstitious type but when I heard that beleaguered a href=http://xbox360.qj.net/tags/brash-entertainment/13925 id=tag title=Video game production companyBrash Entertainment/a was working on an unannounced span style=font-style: italic;Superman/span title I went hmmm. brbrWe recently published an article on the 20 staffers Brash had to can due to economic hardships. This was only the tip of the depressing iceberg. brbrIt seems they’re also unable to pay most of their game developers and are now they’re in the process of getting rid of their licenses. I suppose they hope that the cash they get from selling can pay their way out of the hole they’re in but it seems a pretty desperate measure.brbrThe sum effect is about what you can expect with most of their games in development either in limbo or KIA. Besides the span style=font-style: italic;Superman/span game, the full list of casualties include, span style=font-style: italic;Tale of Desperaux/span, span style=font-style: italic;Prison Break/span, span style=font-style: italic;Night at the Museum 2/span, span style=font-style: italic;Clash of the Titans/span, and span style=font-style: italic;300/span.brbrI suppose they should be counted as lucky to still have two games in confirmed in the works, in spite of everything: span style=font-style: italic;Six Flags Fun Park /spanand span style=font-style: italic;Saw. /spanStill, ospan style=font-style: italic;/spanspan style=font-style: italic;/spanne has to wonder what gods Brash had angered to deserve this. Perhaps the same ones that struck down span style=font-style: italic;Superman 64/span so very long ago?brbrbrhr style=width: 100 ; height: 2px;brspan style=font-weight: bold;Related Articles:br/spanullia title=More layoffs - Brash Entertainment sacks 20 href=http://www.qj.net/More-layoffs-Brash-Entertainment-sacks-20/pg/49/aid/125952span style=font-style: italic;More layoffs - Brash Entertainment sacks 20/span/a/li/ulbrbr pa href=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/qj/xbox?a=bDuKDMimg src=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/qj/xbox?i=bDuKDM border=0/img/a/pimg src=http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/qj/xbox/~4/445851597 height=1 width=1/ a target=_blank rel=nofollow href=’http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/qj/xbox/~3/445851597/125980 ‘Source [qj.xbox]/abr
Sammy’s back: new Afro Samurai screenshots arrive
November 6, 2008
brSammy’s back and we got pics!brbrLast February, a href=http://xbox360.qj.net/tags/namco-bandai/2431 id=tag title=Japanese holding company for Namco and BandaiNamco Bandai/a Games (responsible for such titles as span style=font-style: italic;Soul Caluber IV/span and span style=font-style: italic;Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tankaichi 2/span) announced their intent to produce a video game adaptation of the anime series Afro Samurai.brbrIf you haven’t heard of Afro yet, shame on you. That’s the anime Samuel L. Jackson lent his voice to as the title character. Go watch it if you haven’t already. I promise blood and lots of it. brbrAs for the game, it’s a cel-shaded hack-and-slasher. The gameplay will be combo-based with a time-slowing ability thrown into the mix. Sammy will again be lending his voice to the characters Afro and Ninja Ninja. I also promise blood and lots of it.brbrspan style=font-style: italic;Afro Samurai/span span id=iTxt(span id=iTxta title=Afro Samurai for the PlayStation 3 href=http://ps3.qj.net/Afro-Samurai/cid/4964PlayStation 3/a, a title=Afro Samurai for the Xbox 360 href=http://xbox360.qj.net/category/Afro-Samurai/cid/4965Xbox 360/a/span)/span won’t be out ’til January 27 next year so here are some screenshots to tide you over until then:brbrp style=text-align: center;a href=http://img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/125854/afro-samurai-20081104042618343_qjgenth.jpg?000135 rel=lightbox[article125854] title=Afro 20Samurai 20Screenshots 20- 20Image 201 20 26nbsp 3B 20 20 26nbsp 3B 20 3Ca 20href 3D 22http 3A//img.qj.net/uploads/articles_module/125854/afro-samurai-20081104042618343.jpg 3F000135 22 20target 3D 22_blank 22 3E 3Cimg 20src 3D 22/img/newwindow.png 22 20title 3D 22Open 20in 20new 20window 22 20border 3D 220 22 3E 3C/a 3Eimg style=margin: 3px;
